Thousands of young people will be heading to Lisbon to experience what it means to meet Pope Francis at World Youth Day. To find out the profile, concerns and motivations that lead participants to travel to this country, GAD3 has conducted an online survey of more than 12,500 people in the five official languages of WYD: Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian and English. This study showed that for 34% of those surveyed, this experience is not something new, as they have been to other WYD events before. Forty-seven percent had been to Krakow in 2016, and 37% had been to WYD in Madrid in 2011. But for more than half (66%), this will be their first contact with this type of meeting. Within these figures, 73% have registered as pilgrims, compared to 27% who have done so as volunteers.
