On Friday 17 October, an opinion poll on the Ca na Putxa landfill site in Ibiza was presented in Ibiza. The poll was conducted by GAD3 for the platform ‘¡Hay Soluciones para el vertedero de Ibiza!’ (There are solutions for the Ibiza landfill site!), and analyses the perception of Ibiza’s residents regarding the current situation of waste management on the island.
The results reflect the population’s concern about the lack of effective and sustainable solutions, as well as a growing demand for greater transparency and political commitment.
-
Lack of political will, the main obstacle to waste management in Ibiza
According to the study, 36% of citizens identify the lack of political will as the main problem in waste management in Ibiza. This is followed by the absence of institutional consensus (23%) and economic interests linked to the landfill (23%), revealing a widespread perception of deadlock and mistrust towards the authorities.
In addition, 19% mention a lack of knowledge about alternatives, reflecting the fact that citizens perceive a lack of information about possible solutions or more sustainable management models. Only 3% consider that there is no significant problem in this area.
-
Santa Eulària, the municipality most affected by the nuisance caused by the landfill
The impact of the landfill is particularly noticeable in Santa Eulària, where one in five residents report suffering significant nuisance, and another 16% suffer it occasionally. Proximity to the landfill is a determining factor: 42% of those living in the closest areas report significant discomfort, compared to only 10% of those living further away.
-
Bad odours, gases and environmental degradation: the most notable effects
Among those who report suffering from nuisance, bad odours and gases are the main problem (97%), followed by environmental degradation and the presence of insects or wildlife (47%), and effects on air quality (41%).
In addition, 35% mention noise caused by machinery, and almost a quarter say they have experienced health problems or general discomfort. These data confirm the direct impact that the facility has on the quality of life and health of the nearby population.
-
35% of Ibiza’s citizens support the installation of an incinerator on the island
Faced with the possibility of installing an incinerator, 35% of the population is in favour of installing it even in their own area, but opposition to this measure continues to be clearly in the majority (54%), especially among residents of Santa Eulària who live near the landfill (66%), compared to 43% among those who live further away.
Of the percentage of the population in favour, the data show that only 16% of Ibizans would support the installation of an incinerator even if it were located near their home or workplace. Other more favourable profiles make their support conditional on the plant not being installed in their immediate surroundings (11%), while 7% express doubts as to whether they would maintain their support in that scenario.
-
Air quality and landscape, the main concerns
Faced with the possibility of an incinerator, the main concern among citizens is the deterioration of air quality (43%), followed by the impact on the environment and landscape (41%) and unpleasant odours or nuisance to third parties (33%). Only 10% believe that there would be no negative effects, reflecting a critical, informed population with high environmental awareness.
